Students who started their program before the pastoral theology curriculum revitalization in fall 2019 have greater flexibility for completing MDiv PT course requirements.

We recommend using Stellic to plan your degree and to follow that as best you can, but if you can't, here are the pastoral theology elements that should, ideally, be in your degree plan:

  • Ministerial Formation (PT 111)

  • An introductory course in preaching or proclamation like Gospel Communication (PT 123, formerly Homiletic Foundations) or Theology and Practice of Preaching (PT 121)

  •  An introduction to biblical / pastoral counseling like Introduction to Pastoral Counseling (PC 111 or PTC 363) or Counseling in the Local Church (PTC 522)

  • Another 12 PT (or PTC, or PC) credits

We recommend these minimums — providing a total of 18 credits in pastoral theology — that guarantee introductory material, an element of preaching/speaking, and pastoral counseling.

If you have any issues completing your PT courses, please let us know and we'll work with you to find a solution.
